Passing Rio (FEB 24)

Today is a sea day as we steam from Buzios to Ilhabela. The captain dipped the ship in towards shore for a view of Rio de Janeiro.  It was hazy, but two distinct landmarks were visible – Sugarloaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer.  The statue was so small given our distance offshore that photographing it was pointless.

Sugarloaf was more discernible, but not as discernible as “False Sugarloaf”.  The top picture below is of some fellow passengers earnestly photographing the latter (from the right between the first and second person) thinking it was the former.  The bottom picture is the real Sugarloaf (from the right between the second and third person).
When we return from Ilhabela on the day after tomorrow, we will pass False Sugarloaf and the then Sugarloaf as we make our way into Rio.
